December Meeting

The monthly meeting will be held on Thursday the 3rd of December at the Community Center.

Social hour will begin at 6:00 with dinner being served at 7:00.

This is our annual Christmas potluck. Please bring a side dish, salad, appetizer or dessert that will serve 10 to 12 people. The Club will provide ham and turkey.

Don't forget money for the raffle.

Tickets are a dollar each or 7 tickets for $5.

Proceeds benefit Pagosa senior students going to college as well as younger students studying nature and conservation and learning outdoor sports and skills.

Helping Hands

We will be collecting donations for the Helping Hands program. Local senior citizens and families with children have applied for assistance. Their needs are listed on paper stockings which are available at either City Market. Pick one or more stockings, buy what is needed, wrap it, place the paper stocking on the package and bring it to the meeting. We will deliver the packages to the appropriate people.

No time to shop? They will be more than happy to accept monetary donations.

What a great way to make someone's holiday a little happier.

President's Message

The following proposed by-law addition will be voted on at the Board meeting scheduled for Dec.2 at 3:30 at the home of Joyce Ramberg. Any interested member may attend and is welcome to express their opinion. It takes a vote of 3/4 of the board to pass the proposal. We have been able to obtain a general liability policy for the club from Farmer's Ins. for a very reasonable annual cost of $350 with $1,000,000 per incident/$2,000,000 per year coverage. Importantly, this will also give us host liquor liability coverage as long as we do not sell alcohol. Thus, we should be able to continue providing beer and wine at our meetings and social gatherings.

Addition to the By Laws

ARTICLE 9.0 INDEMNIFICATION CLAUSE

9.1 To the extent permitted or required by the Colorado Nonprofit Corporation Act and any other applicable law, if any Director or Officer of the Corporation is made a party to or is involved in any proceeding ( which term shall mean any threatened, pending or completed action, suit or proceeding whether civil, criminal, administrative or investigative, and whether formal or informal) because such person is or was a director or officer of the corporation, the Corporation: (a) shall indemnify such Person from and against any judgments, penalties, fines and amounts paid in settlement and reasonable expenses ( including but not limited to expenses of investigation and preparation, and fees and disbursements of counsel, accountants or other experts) incurred by such person in such proceeding,and (b) shall advance to such person expenses incurred in such proceeding.

The Corporation may in its discretion (but is not obligated in any way to) indemnify and advance expenses to an employee or agent of the Corporation to the same extent as to a Director or Officer.

The foregoing provisions for indemnification and advancement of expenses are not exclusive, and the Corporation may at its discretion provide for indemnification or advancement of expenses in a resolution of its Members or Directors, in a contract or in its Articles of Incorporation.

Any repeal or modification of the foregoing provisions of this Article for indemnification or advancement of expenses shall not effect adversely any right or protection stated in such provisions with respect to any act or omission occurring prior to the time of such repeal or modification. If any provision of this Article or any part thereof shall be held to be prohibited by or invalid under applicable law, such provision or part thereof shall be deemed amended to accomplish the objectives of the provision or part thereof as originally written to the fullest extent permitted by the law, and all other provisions or parts shall remain in full force and effect.

9.2 The San Juan Outdoor Club shall at all times maintain a general liability insurance policy with a minimum coverage limit of $1,000,000 and will pay the premium in a timely manner to maintain such coverage.

Upcoming Activities

Keep an eye on the Calendar. Things are being added all the time.

Coming up, we have snowshoes, cross country skiing, bowling, and the Thursday ladies walks (or snowshoes if weather dictates). Things will pick up once we have more of the white stuff. Get your equipment ready!

First Aid and CPR

First-Aid and CPR (combined $65) training will be conducted at the Archuleta County Education Center located at 4th and Lewis Streets. CPR ($50) training will be held on Monday, January 11 followed by First-Aid ($45) training on Wednesday, January 13. The training for each will run from 6-10 p.m. Important: There will be registration forms at the Dec. 3 and Jan. 7 meetings, but participants must deliver the completed forms and pay in advance at the Education Center. This training is open to the general public so register as soon as possible. For anyone needing recertification, this program will qualify, but you must inform them at registration. NOTE: Anyone who leads a 2010 SJOC sponsored activity will be reimbursed half their training cost at year’s end. Questions? Contact Mike Schneider at mschneid@skywerx.com

Chama Chile Ski Classic

Cross-country Skiers and Snowshoers, come to Chama in northern New Mexico for a weekend of winter fun in the South San Juan Mountains!

The Chama Chile Ski Classic, over the Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend, features 5K and 10K classical cross-country ski races, a 5K snowshoe race and combined events for all ages and abilities.

The weekend also includes 3 ski clinics (telemark, avalanche rescue, classic skiing techniques), guided ski tours, pasta dinner and beer tasting, and Awards Ceremony with music by the Unstrung Heroes.

November Activities

Ski Swap

The annual ski swap and bake sale was held on Oct. 24 and was an overwhelming success with the vendors, customers and for the scholarship fund. Everyone really enjoyed the move to the community center this year and the extra space available for displaying equipment. The bake sale added a very festive and fun feel to the event and a little snow on the mountains improved everyone's attitude. The total sale proceeds were over $22,000-that was up 21% from last year and the net profit to the club was $2688. The bake sale added another $530 to the general fund. All the volunteers deserve a big thank you for all the hard work, over sixty people chipped in to help pull off the event. I think everyone had a good time and enjoyed the camaraderie with their fellow club members. If you would like to help in some way next year let Ron Chacey hear from you, ideas are already being floated around about how to make the swap even better next year.

Thursday Ladies Walk

Hey girls, remember if there's snow on the streets, the walk turns into cross country skiing or snowshoeing (your choice) at the Golf Course.

The last Thursday in Oct. was pretty cold, 15 degrees. But that didn't stop these brave ladies

from their weekly walk. Brrrrrrrrr!

Bisti Badlands

Betsy, Sue and Susan took off on a long day trip to the Bisti Badlands. It is 30 minutes south of Farmington. It makes for a great outing because you can mix in a little shopping afterwards. We hiked two miles due east from the parking lot to see some interesting formations.
This is a trailless area, so be sure and take a GPS. There are no facilities. You wouldn't want to get lost out there.

Golf Outing

SJOC golfers – Carolyn, Betsy, Bob, Doug, Toosje and Shirley – traveled to Farmington to play Pinon Hills, one of Golf Digest top ranked courses. We were very impressed with the course although the pin placements would challenge the best of golfers (and some of us are not the best so we were extra challenged). The course is open year round and is worth the trip.

On Nov. 21st we went down into the meadows and forest behind the bottom of the Alberta lift at WC pass. We went about 2.5 mi., with some bushwacking and breaking trail. Afterward, most of us went to Bear Creek Rest. for lunch and refreshments.

This year has really flown by. I really enjoyed being newsletter editor. Being relatively new to the club at the beginning of 2009, it was a great way to get involved and meet more people. Thanks to everyone who contributed articles and photographs. You made my job much easier. Now I know a little bit more about computers - but still have a long way to go. I just couldn't stand to be out of the loop, so I volunteered to be secretary for 2010. See you outside!

Meeting

The November meeting will be on Thursday, November 5th at the Community Center starting at 6:30 p.m.

The program will be a presentation on the Grand Canyon assembled by Ed Funk who has hiked the Grand Canyon eight times. Merlin Wheeler will begin the presentation with a brief explanation of the Grand Canyon geology. This will be followed by a ten minute, four-part PowerPoint show on the human endeavor, Canyon plants, Canyon waters, and Canyon vistas. John Graves will be playing a piano accompaniment that he assembled for the presentation. NOTE: The pictures on this presentation have been taken by published photographers.

Refreshments will be provided by: Fred Reese, Margaret Kleiner, Bob Milford, Kari Plante, and Carolyn Warszawski.

Don't forget money for the Education Fund Raffle.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

The snow has started to fall and Wolf Creek opens this weekend, so it's looks to be a good winter. The Ski Swap was a tremendous success last weekend and the comments from the vendors and shoppers overwhelmingly supported the move to the Community Center. The preliminary numbers show sales in excess of $22,000 and the Bake sale took in over $500. This money goes back into the general fund for use totally in support of our members. The girls deserve a lot of credit for putting on a festive and tasty bake sale that really adds to the overall fun of the swap. I'm really proud to be part of a group of volunteers that worked together and had fun with such a huge effort. The scholarship fund will profit and the community was well served. There were way too many people involved to thank individually but congratulations to everyone involved for a job very well done.

So far for Nov., we will have our first easy snowshoe on Sat., Nov 21st led by Gregg Howard, bowling on the 18th, and the Thursday morning ladies walk / coffee ( which will turn into snowshoeing or XC skiing when conditions dictate).

Take special notice of the Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser hosted by SJOC on Friday, Nov. 6th from 6-8pm at the Pagosa Youth Club. Proceeds will benefit the Wolf Creek Race Team.

Also, note that, per Jean the Queen of Clean, there will be no highway trash pickup during Nov.

FESTIVAL of TREES

The SJOC entry for the Festival of Trees needs your help. We will have a box at the November 5 meeting to collect donated ornaments for the tree. They can be used (if in good condition) or hand crafted or store bought. The ornaments need to reflect the outdoors, outdoor activities or nature. For those of you with crafting skills, we would love to have your handmade ornaments which would make the tree unique.

We want to encourage our SJOC membership to bid on the tree. Our charity has not been confirmed yet but will most likely be the SJOC Education fund – tax deductible. Just think -- no hassle to pull out tree and ornaments. If you’re the winning bidder, your tree will be delivered on December 5 and you can enjoy it for the remainder of the holiday season. Plus, it is a pre-lit artificial tree and can be used for many seasons to come.

The SJOC tree will be on display along with the other entrants during our SJOC Christmas party on December 3. Please plan to attend the Festival of Trees party and auction on Friday, December 4, from 6pm-8:30pm and bid on the SJOC tree. The evening will include catered hors d’oeuvres, cash bar and music. Dress for the season and the cost is only $10/person.

Pagosa Nordic Ski Club

In the sidebar under "Useful Links" you will find a new link to the Pagosa Nordic Club's website.
If you like to cross country ski, this is the site for you. It has trail maps for the different areas that will be groomed this season and it will tell you when each one has been groomed. Even though they do this for free, I'm sure they would welcome new members and donations to help with the expense. Check it out!

Helping Hands

At the December meeting, we will be collecting donations for Helping Hands. I believe you can get all the details at City Market. Joyce will also give details at the Nov. meeting. What a great way to help those that are less fortunate. Remember, the greatest joy is in giving!

PAGOSA PEDALERS

The Monday bike group enjoyed a colorful, but cool ride along Monument Park Road and then out through the forest to the backcountry hut. A few snowflakes occasionally drifted through the air and the fall colors were still pretty. All in all it was a good workout and hopes for making it a loop ride back to the Turkey Springs Hut were discussed.

GRAND CANYON BACKPACK

Once again, David and Shirley Hunter led a fantastic trip into the Grand Canyon. Joining them were Jim and Jean Scott, Marvin Sacks, Susan Milford, Betsy Cotton and Judy Aswell, (Betsy's friend from Texas).

This was a 5 day trip - down the Boucher Trail, across the Tonto Trail, and back up the Hermit Trail.

The Boucher Trail is not maintained and was quite challenging.

The first night, we camped on Yuma Point and had really strong winds with gusts up to 60mph (according to Park Rangers). The Scott's tent collapsed, the Hunters got bent tent poles and a hole in their rat sack (from being blown against a tree limb), and Betsy got a hole in her tent (from being blown against a rock all night). Needless to say, there wasn't much sleep going on that first night. The weather improved the next day and was pretty darn good until the last night when it started raining. We packed up our wet stuff and headed out at first light. It continued to rain off and on all day with a little hail and lightning thrown in for fun. We did get to see some georgeous rainbows - making it all worth it. The scenery the rest of the time wasn't too shabby either. A good time was had by all.

President's Message

Howdy everyone,

It's hard to believe we're heading into the last quarter of the year already. This is a big month for the club-the Ski Swap comes up on October 24th. This is our largest fund raiser for the education fund and we'll be asking for lot's of volunteers to help out with the event. Also, plan on consigning that unused gear that's waiting to find a new home and make yourself a few bucks. It's also a great opportunity to pick up some new gear at real bargain prices compared to what the new stuff sells for these days.

The other important item we address this month is starting the process of selecting new officers and board members to guide the club in the coming year. We would like to hear from you about any interest you have in serving the club, unless you contact someone on the board we won't know what you might like to help with. If you know someone who you think might be a talented help to the club please let any one of us hear from you. It's not a lot of work for any one person as everyone helps throughout the year and it's great fun. It only takes a few individuals to fill the board but if everyone waits for someone else to do it then nothing gets done, so please look at what you can do to help-that's what makes this group of people so much fun and why we get to enjoy all the great events we have throughout the year.

Don't forget to wear your blaze orange if you're out and about. October is rifle season. You can pick up the hunting schedule at the Ranger Office.

SEPTEMBER ACTIVITIES

Williams Reservoir Outing

September 2-3

This was a good idea that didn't quite materialize. The weather didn't cooperate, what a surprise! The idea was to camp out, enjoy the day, attend the pot luck then kayak on the reservoir under a full moon. Well, we enjoyed the day with bike ride and visiting, attended the pot luck which was really good, but the clouds took over the sky and the full moon made only brief appearances. The kayaking did not happen but we'll give it another try next year.

Plenty of toys to play with during the day if only the weather would cooperate!

Some good company made all the difference.

Salsa Fiesta

The Bakers, Bozeks, Longs and Webbs enjoyed a beautiful day at the annual Creede Salsa Fiesta on September 6th. We sampled red, green, fruit, and HOT TAMALE salsa!!!

After we had our fill of the hot stuff, some of us headed for the ice cream parlor to cool down and the guys headed for one of the local bars to cool down. True to form (we have to keep up the club's reputation for eating), we rounded off the day with pizza. Organizer:

Plant Exchange

Many plants and flower seeds found a new home at the plant exchange. The enthusiastic gardeners shared items they brought and offered planting advice. Several folks with new landscaping will be making colorful additions thanks to the generosity of some established gardens in Pagosa.

Mountain Bike Clinic

September 15th

Many thanks go out to Tom at Pedal & Powder. He spent a great deal of time with those of us that attended adjusting this, tweeking that, and explaining A LOT of possible cheap fixes for problems we might have out on the trail. If you need any help with your bike, I highly recommend talking to Tom. He'll help you in the most cost efficient way possible and help you know what to do to avoid that problem in the future. Everyone left armed with valuable new knowledge and skills. I have no photos cuz I was busy learnin' stuff. Sorry.

Pagosa Pedalers

September 28th

A small core of the PP's ventured out under the leadership of Suzanne to ride Blue Creek Road to a lovely vista. The 9 mile RT ride required some uphill tenacity and rewarded with downhill fun, all under a bright blue sky accented with reds and golds along the way. Does it get any better? I don't think so. Check the calendar each Sunday to see if another ride has been added. This was our last officially planned ride but members may choose to continue as long as the weather permits. In fact, Barry is going to lead the group Monday, Oct. 5th on a Monument Park ride. Meet at Turkey Springs and Newt Jack Rds. at 9 a.m.

It's been great fun this summer on the bikes. I know I and others in the group have improved our abilities and endurance a great deal over the weeks of riding. We'll pick it up again next year with two groups - one for mostly residential roads around the North and South Pagosa Blvd. areas and one for trails and forest roads. Hopefully, all the 2009 folks will return and we'll add a bunch in 2010!

The Lime Mesa Adventure

Bob, Betsy and I made the LONG drive north of Durango to hike Lime Mesa.The hike was great with fantastic views, BUT the drive took almost 3 hours to get to the trailhead. The last two miles were really rocky and required heavy duty 4WD. Very slow going. The trailhead is at 11,400ft. and we ended up around 12,600ft. We were supposed to camp one night and continue down to some lakes, but it would have just been Betsy and me, so we changed it to a day hike instead, and Bob joined us. It ended up being an all-dayer. The lakes were very tempting though. Maybe next time.

Howdy,

It's hard to believe with this great warm weather we've had that there will soon be snow appearing on the peaks and the Ski Swap is only a month away. If you have old gear that's still usable plan on consigning it to the swap and pick up a little cash for those new toys you want. Thursday is our potluck at the Sportsman Campground and it is always a fun way to wrap up the summer. Saturday is the plant exchange which will be at the Ferguson's house at 303 Butte, just off Aspen Glow on Lake Pagosa. The time is 10-11AM. Bring your seeds and plants and if you're looking for additions for your yard stop by and pick up some new plants, fall is a good time to get those perennials established for next year. Get out and enjoy the camping and hiking activities we have planned and enjoy the upcoming fall.

Gray Wolf Web Site

There is also a link to the Gray Wolf web site for their Tuesday hiking schedule.Two groups of different hiking abilities meet every Tuesday for hikes. Group A is a bit faster and does more strenuous hikes. Group B is a bit easier. This is a separate club that you should join if you like to hike in summer and ski in winter.

Short Notice Backpackers

We have started something new called Short Notice Backpackers. It is a list of people that like to backpack and don't need much time to get ready. Whenever someone dreams up a trip, they notify everyone on the list by e-mail. Those interested reply to the organizer that they would like to go. Short notice planning allows us to take advantage of good weather. We have found that planning weeks and months in advance can sometimes lock us in to a time slot with bad weather. And backpacking is a LOT more fun in good weather. So, if you like to backpack, you should be on this list.

Pagosa Pedalers

every Monday

The PP's are still going strong. The first photo is from our foray at Hershey Ranch. We got to go through mud, water, uphill, and, the most fun, downhill. We had two casualties but nothing too serious. They lived to ride another day! We've spent a few Monday mornings on the trails in the Brockover area. It's full of single track and ATV trails to explore. We'll be continuing our regular rides through September 28th. I encourage all those who wish to continue after that date to throw rides up on the calendar as long as weather allows. PP Power!

San Luis Peak

August 11th

David and Shirley Hunter led a group of 10 hearty souls out to conquer San Luis Peak.(David, Shirley, Bob, Susan, Joan, Terry, Leo, Marvin, Gary and Ken)

We camped beside it for two nights. This allowed us to summit without our packs, going up one side and down the other. Who needs trails? Just go straight up scree slopes until you come to the trail and follow drainages or whatever strikes your fancy to get back to the campsite.

It's always an adventure with the Hunters. And lots of fun.

This picture is blown up and it is a little blurry, but you can see our "pet deer" which we named Helen, almost getting Marvin's food bag. He scared her off and raised the bag. She was quite disappointed when she returned a few minutes later with a friend and it was out of reach.

Backpack to Archuleta Lake

August 18th

Five women: Betsy, Susan, Joan, Charleen and Barbara headed out on the Continental Divide Trail from Lobo Overlook toward Archuleta Lake. We had great weather the whole time. Not a drop of rain.

The first night we camped at Spotted Lake. We walked about half a mile the next day and camped at Archuleta Lake. We didn't realize just how close it was. But all was well as we climbed Mt Hope above the lake for fabulous views. The third day we hiked out to Big Meadows.

on “green power”. They will explain how you can use energy reducing steps and renewable energy to earn rebates through LPEA and the IRS.

President's Message

Hello everyone,

I'm spending a month hiking Glacier and the Canadian Rockies and writing today from Banff. I hope it's as nice in Pagosa as up here. We had a great picnic on the 4th and thanks again to everyone who helped out in making it a success. Thanks again to the Long's for letting us come out to their beautiful spot on the river. The float in the parade was a lot of work but was fun for everyone. The silent auction turned out well, raising over $1,000. Just a reminder to you gardeners about the plant swap in September. If you have things you need to divide this is the perfect opportunity to share the wealth of your yard with some of the newer folks in the area, or find something you have been wanting to add to your garden. If you haven't looked at the calendar in awhile, there is lot's of good stuff happening, get out and enjoy.

Pagosa Peak Hike - July 2nd

We had a large group for the Pagosa Peak hike that broke into two. Bart Cox left two hours early with a slower paced group and we all enjoyed a cool cloudy sky for the hike up. By the time both groups reached the summit it had broken into a beautiful sunny day and, as usual, the views of the San Juan's in all directions were breathtaking. After a lazy lunch everyone headed down and the early arrivals at the trailhead enjoyed a cold beer or two as usual.

4th of July Parade

We had some energetic walkers....

Pagosa Pedalers

The Pagosa Pedalers are still going strong. Every Monday a dozen or more MTBers meet to ride forest roads and trails and enjoy our beautiful Pagosa scenery. So far, we have ventured to Turkey Springs, Monument Park, West Fork, 8 Mile Mesa, Kenney Flats, and East Fork. The rides range from easy flat to some challenging uphill, wide forest roads to single track. We're all learning some technique and working on our endurance. We also get to practice a little cattle wrangling along the way! The rides are posted on the Activities Calendar. Come and join the PP's for a ride!

Thursday Morning Walkers

Thursday Morning walkers ready to hit the streets for an hour aka 4 miles. They meet every Thursday morning, 9 a.m., at the Rec Center on Park Avenue. Shirley Hunter is the organizer but she's not afraid to delegate leadership.

After burning up all those calories, it's time to replenish! A great time to catch up on what's going on with who, where, and when. This is outdoor club social networking at its finest!

Summitville Camp Out

Bart & Erika Cox know how to throw an outdoor party. Just ask the 25 “guests” that joined them for the Summitville Camp Out July 11-12. That’s right - Twenty Seven total. In addition to Bart & Erika, were: Joan & Sid Harris, Judi Ferguson, Ingrid Leppitsch, Larry Dunn, Betsy Cotton & her brother, Wade, Lynne & Mike Sinkey, Dick Redfield, Cynthia Riski, Buck & Mary Gamache and their daughter, Abby, Ron Chacey, Dalas & Carrie Weisz, Jack & Sue Passant, Leo Milner, Ken & Mary Ann Durham, Gary Brewer, Carl Pitts, and Poppy Borland. And let’s not forget the loyal 4-legged campers - Sock, Taylor, Buddy, Cody & BJ.

One might think the group would take the most direct and maintained road i.e. Park Creek Road. One might not know Bart. The convoy headed up Tucker Pond Road which, magically, transformed into one of those narrow, rocky, drop-edged kind of things. You know the ones. I believe the strategy was to see who could drive that road (I use the word loosely) and make the most caustic comments on the 2-way radios. I’ll let those involved decide the winner of that contest. I do pick Mary and Cynthia for the best vocal duo award, however.

The Saturday hike rendered visual delights and a lesson in the Bart Cox School of Disclaimers i.e. “the vehicles SHOULD be this direction,” and “they are PROBABLY right over there.” Fortunately for us all, they were.

After visiting Grayback Mountain via automobiles and enjoying 360 degree views, camp for 27 was made over, oh I don’t know, about 10 acres. I exaggerate but you can imagine. If someone were researching tents, that would have been a perfect opportunity as I don’t believe there were any two alike. A virtual bouquet of nylon.

The campfire gathering sported two particularly unique events. FIRST was the Flume o’ Flame provided by Ron and CLOSELY supervised by the multi-lingual Ken who can say “Sacre Bleu!” in at least three languages. The SECOND was the entertaining creation of Bananas Flambe’ provided by Leo and, again, CLOSELY supervised by Ken “Let’s Try This” Durham. If you would like to view both of those fascinating phenomenon, click on the link in the sidebar under “Useful Links” called “Summitville Bananas” and you’ll see a YouTube video never before and probably never again witnessed by the viewing public.

On a bright Sunday morning many of the gang hiked up to Bonita Peak and enjoyed the wide open spaces and crisp air. As the gang returned to camp and packed their gear, “good-byes” and “see-ya-soons” filled the air. Thanks to Bart & Erika for organizing this chance to enjoy our mountains and, more so, our friends.

Bike Clinic

Pagosa Pedalers attended a Bike Maintenance Clinic July 22nd. Tom, with Pedal & Powder, kindly educated and entertained the group free of charge so that we might be better able to care for our bikes and manage problems that could arise on the trail. Those attending were: Betsy C., Joan H., Steve & Kathie B., Suzanne C., Klaus N., Carolle H.A., Cindy & Bill H., Bob & Susan M., and John D. We are thankful to Tom for taking his personal time and sharing with us those helpful little tips that may keep us out of trouble! Please offer your thanks anytime you visit the folks in Pedal & Powder.
There will be a follow-up clinic August 25th @ 7:30-9:00 p.m. to learn more maintenance and repair. Anybody may attend at no cost or you can bring your bike to learn it specifically for a charge of $10. Maximum # of people is 12. A group of over 20 folks joined the Hunters in Silverton to ogle the wildflowers that were absolutely fantastic and, of course, to hike the high country. The Hunters stayed 2 weeks and folks came and went as their schedules allowed. The pictures tell their own story.

July 28th

Betsy Cotton, Susan Milford and Joan Harris took off on a great adventure. When we plan a backpack trip, we go rain or shine. This trip was, unfortunately, more rain than shine. We left July 28th and came back July 31st (a day early). We put our rain gear on and took it off about 30 times. At the highest point of the trail on the Continental Divide Trail, (over 12,000 ft.), it commenced to hail and rain with the wind blowing so hard it blew us off the trail. But we were lucky because we never had to set up camp or pack up in the rain. The views were fantastic. We found great camping spots every day but the last one. We actually found a good spot, but it started hailing and raining. So we kept walking. We never found another spot to suit us, so we walked all the way out. 12.3 miles!! That's a miracle for us. We had one air mattress leak and two faulty water filters. We survived anyway and emerged with smiles on our faces.

Happy July 4th

Join us for the parade in the morning and the picnic in the afternoon on July 4th.

Please note: there will NOT be a meeting on July 2nd (Thursday)

Parade

The parade starts at 10:00. If you are helping decorate the float, please be at the High School at 8:00. By the way, we have an awesome float. If you would like to walk in the parade, be at the High School at 9:00. Wear any combination of red, white and blue. You can also carry sports equipment if you like. (tennis raquets, golf clubs, snowshoes, backpacks, etc.) We have an outdoor theme, of course. After the parade, the float will be taken apart. Please take anything you contributed home at this time.

Picnic

The picnic will be at Ken and Joanne Long's at 2:00.

Directions are included in the President's Message below.

The Club will provide chicken, drinks, and root beer floats!

Bring a side dish of your choice that will feed 6 - 8 people.

You also might like to bring lawn chairs for your dining pleasure.

President's Message

Happy 4th everyone,

It looks like summer has finally hit Pagosa, I hope you're enjoying the outdoors. We have a lot going on, of course the parade is the morning of July 4 downtown, if you what to be part of the group call Donna Milner. That afternoon at 2PM is our picnic out at the Long's place on the Piedra River. If you haven't been there before, take the road to the left just before the Piedra River bridge on HWY 160 and look for the cars at the place on the right a few houses down. It's a potluck and we will also have the silent auction. A great group is riding on Monday mornings, if you haven't been give it a try. The hikers and backpackers have some good treks going into the mountains and the flowers are starting to come nicely. The more water inclined have enjoyed some nice river running. Just your typical month in paradise. If you have something fun in mind you would like to try, give Gregg Howard a call so he can put it on the calendar. Let's get out and play.

They have hikes every Tuesday until October. There are two groups. The A group does more difficult hikes at a faster pace and the B group does shorter distances at a slower pace. They are both a lot of fun. You will meet some great people and learn the trails. Check out their website to get all the details. Click on hiking to get the schedules for the summer. The website also has the information you need to join the club. Oh, and if you join, you get a discount on season ski passes.

For July, we have the Thursday morning walks with the ladies, Monday morning mountain bike rides, a hike to Pagosa Peak on the 2nd, and an overnight camp in Summitville with short hikes.

June 6th

The June 6th fly fishing clinic was held at the Pagosa Springs Community Sports Complex for both beginners and intermediate fly fisherpersons. The intermediate participants include: Bill Gates, Jack and Pam Schricker, Bob Milford, and Doug Farmer. The beginning group was comprised of: Joe Negri, Jan Swalley, Barbara Olgletree, John and Kathy Comerford, and Zack Farmer. Jim Hill and Damon Scott, fishing specialists for “let It Fly”, once again provided instruction. We would also like to thank “Let It Fly” for providing the additional fly rods for some of the participants. The weather was perfect and hopefully I did not leave someone off the list or out of the pictures.

Rafting the Colorado thru the Grand Canyon in May

Jim & Jean Scott put together a rafting trip thru the GC and filled up one of two rafts with 14 SJOC club members and friends. A second raft also had 14 guests making a total of 32 folks including the 4 crew members. We had great boatmen who knew the river like the backs of their hands. The trip began on May 2 at Lee’s Ferry and came out at Lake Mead on May 9 covering the total 284 mile river journey in 8 days. Some of the highlights were running the rapids where most of us happily got wet for the thrill of the ride; the Little Colorado River that was aquamarine colored and where some of us put our life jackets on like diapers and floated it; Elves Chasm where the more adventurous climbed behind the falls and jumped into the pool below; Havasu Creek that was also the color of aquamarines and where we spent about 3 hours exploring; Spectacular Deer Creek falls and the hike overlooking the slot canyon formed by the creek; and exploring many other spots difficult to get to from the rim. The group topped the trip off with a night in Vegas after returning to civilization. Our friends will be glad to know that we kept the SJOC tradition of eating well and often.

Wounded Warriors

The first week of June saw Pagosa Country visited by 14 heroes, the “Wounded Warriors.” The week was full of events for the “Warriors” – eating, drinking, partying, and adventures ranging from hiking to rafting to fishing to riding. The SJOC hosted two hikes for the Wounded Warriors. I have chronicled one hike, the hike up Alberta Peak with “Warriors” Tim Kerrigan and Richard Vattuone.

We started our hike (with Les Shepard of SAR) at the Raven lift (see photo of motley crew), went up Kelly Boise to the top of Bonanza. The snow was deep there (see photo – Tim on right). The push up the peak was a challenge for Rich (see photo). Tim and Rich were inspired by the view and Rich even more inspired by our decent (slide) down a snow field (see photo).

The day ended at the bottom of Treasure lift (1400 vertical feet later) with sore feet and knees as well as high-fives all around.

Rio Grande Rafting Trip

Elk Creek Backpack trip

On June 24th, 8 brave soles headed up Elk Creek in the South San Juan Wilderness for a three day trip. Leader Betsy Cotton was accompanied by Barbara Ogletree, Carl Pitts, Suzanne Coe, Sid and Joan Harris, and Bob and Susan Milford. The weather forcast wasn't good, but they forged on. They camped for two nights at Second Meadows, where every day blessed them with a little (or a lot) of rain. Some did a little fishing while the rest dayhiked or just relaxed.

I thought we weren't supposed to gain much elevation. Whew!

Sid was the only lucky fisherman this trip. And you should have heard about the ones he threw back.

It rained most of the 2nd night. Most of the tents got some water in them. Here's Barbara trying to dry out her pants by the fire.

Thank goodness for this bridge. We would still be there if we had to cross the creek on foot after that rain. Joan, Bob, Barb and Susan happy to be heading back.

July 4th Float Preparations

Several dedicated men and women showed up at Judy and Steve Ferguson's to create a float for the 4th of July Parade. Donna Milner was the mastermind behind the project. First, the men nailed, hammered, and sawed. Then the women took over. The float represents America the Beautiful and all the outdoor activities we are involved in. Be sure to check it out at the parade.

Howdy,
I think summer is coming, but it's questionable now as I watch it snow up on Pagosa Peak. Memorial Day typically kicks off the summer and we have lot's happening this month. This is our quarterly potluck and I'm sure it will be well attended as many off our old friends will be back in town for the summer and it's always fun to renew old ties. The Relay For Life happens this month and everyone always comes through with great support. We are working on a great entry for the July 4th parade and the silent auction is coming up at our picnic. Anyone willing to help out and have some fun is very welcome, just let us know your interest. Hiking, biking, fishing, and golfing all go into high gear this month and Greg would welcome anyone interested in leading an activity during the summer. If you have some pictures to share, email them to Mike Schneider quickly so he can include them in the show at the potluck.

Scholarships

May 19, 2009

Four Pagosa High School graduates have been chosen to receive the 2009 San Juan Outdoor Club scholarship awards. Those selected are Rachel Jensen, Kyrie Ivanovitch, Jacob Haynes, and Kyle Monks. Each winner will receive a $1000 scholarship. (A special thanks goes out to Charleen Stipe, Sara Scott, Cindy Quigley, Margaret and Leonard Kleiner for making this difficult decision.)

Rachel Jensen

Rachel has earned Highest Honors in all her classes and plans to attend Mills College in Oakland, California.

Sports are a huge part of Rachel’s life. She ran her first marathon this year and likes to hike, backpack, and ski with her family. Rachel earned a varsity letter and was among the top 25% of state finishers on the cross-country team.

She has held several leadership positions in Key Club, National Honor Society, Girl Talk, and Recycling Club. She also won the North Star Leadership Award for her participation in Girls on Ice (Glaciology and Leadership Program).

Rachel plans to major in environmental science and would like to research solutions to environmental problems.

Kyrie Ivanovich

Kyrie plans to major in biomedical engineering at Colorado State University and has been accepted to the Hughes Undergraduate Research Program.

Her outdoor activities include hiking, backpacking, snowboarding, and camping. She has been a cheerleader throughout high school and has also participated in track and field.

She has demonstrated her leadership abilities through her participation in the Baylor University High School Summer Science Research Program, Earthwatch Student Challenge Awards Program, and the Continental Divide Washington, D.C., Youth Tour.

After college, she plans to work as a research biologist in order to further “a more extensive understanding of the world’s diverse ecosystems.”

Jacob Haynes

Jacob will major in aeronautical engineering either at Colorado University or at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University.

He enjoys all kinds of outdoor activities, including hunting, fishing, hiking, mountain biking, camping, rafting, kayaking, and telemark, downhill, and cross-country skiing. He also plays basketball, volleyball, and ultimate Frisbee.

Jacob participates in many school activities and has held offices in Key Club, FBLA, and Pagosa Springs Aviation Venture Crew. His honors include Colorado School of Mines Medal of Achievement in Science and Mathematics, CU High School Honors Institute in Engineering, and Honor Band.

After earning his degree, he wants to work for an aerospace company, designing the airplanes, cars, and wind turbines of the future.

Kyle Monks

Kyle is planning to major in photography at Colorado University. He has a vision to preserve nature through art, recording human impact on the environment.

His outdoor activities include snowboarding, biking, longboarding, hiking, skateboarding, and running. He has also participated in soccer and track.

His awards include the Colorado Division Gold Key Photography Portfolio Winner and awards from the Pagosa Springs Art Council Photography Contest. Music is another area of interest, as he plays the guitar, bass, and drums.

With his degree, Kyle wants to become a professional photographer. His skills will help him to capture the beauty of nature and to show the “consequences of neglecting our environment.”

The board has decided to have another silent auction since last years was such a success. Proceeds from this auction will go to Search and Rescue and into the scholarship fund. There were so many questions that we ran out of time for our other speaker, Nathan Trout ( who has a Masters in Physical Therapy). However, Nathan graciously agreed to come back another time to do his presentation on exercises you can do to help prevent injury.

May Meeting

The San Juan Outdoor Club meeting will be held on Thursday, May 7 at the Community Center on Hot Springs Blvd. with the social hour starting at 6:30 PM. Refreshments will be provided by Jean Carson, Sue Lomperis, Joyce Ramberg, and Marsha Baker. The speakers for the evening will be Dr. Timothy Mazzola, MD with a subspecialty in sports medicine, and Nathan Trout who has a Masters in Physical Therapy. Message From Our President

Howdy,

At the moment we are rafting through the Grand Canyon on an eight day trip. It has been quite a change from the end of a really terrific ski season into spring. The skis are waxed and shelved and the bike is now out. These were the best end of season snow conditions imaginable, but I'm sure everyone is happy for the warm days. Mike Schneider will be hosting the May meeting in my absence, again if you have some great photos from the first half of the year please email them to him to include in the show at the June potluck.The Ski Swap committee had their first organizational meeting and is enthusiastically planning for an even bigger and more successful swap this October. Bob Harrington has begun preparations for the Relay for Life and needs two volunteers to bring a pot of chili on June 19 for the midnight snack-you can leave the food with him any time. Please contact Bob if you can help.The Wounded Warrior project is sponsoring the visit of some vets to Pagosa from June 1-5. If anyone would be interested in spending a couple hours kayaking with one of the Vets during that week please contact me. Also we have about eight Vets who will be hiking on June 5 with us. One group will go in the morning and one in the afternoon, these will be mostly short, rather easy hikes. We need about 8-10 volunteers to go along on the hikes to help ensure everyone has a good time and stays safe. Please contact me if you're interested in helping.

April Outings

Grand Canyon Backpack

March 30-April 4

David and Shirley Hunter led Bob and Susan Milford and Sid and Joan Harris on a wonderful backpacking trip into the Canyon. They entered on the Hermit Trail, headed east on the Tonto Trail and exited on the Bright Angel Trail. Two nights were spent camping on Hermit Creek, two nights on Monument Creek and one night at Indian Gardens. There was snow on the rim at the beginning of the trip, and snow on the trail (towards the top) at the end of the trip. It was much colder and windier than expected. But, a good time was had by all. The scenery was FANTASTIC as you can see below.

Lake Heron State Park

We didn't know when we arrived that the entire park would be ours, ours, ours! Why people aren't out there taking advantage of that lovely park is beyond me. With great views, two lakes, a river canyon, hike and bike trail, and tables at every site, it is a little gem so close to us. Oh well, their loss cuz we thoroughly enjoyed it.
Abby and I had perfect weather during our two night outing at Lake Heron State Park. Crystal blue skies and only a bit of wind for a few hours one afternoon. Of course, that wind was trying to blow us up river as we were trying to paddle down river but let's not dwell on details. It was otherwise calm and lovely.
We were able to enjoy a full moon paddle on the lake Tuesday night. I don't think I've ever worn so many clothes in a kayak before! With the clear, starlit sky it was a bit nippy but no less enjoyable. We mountain biked two days. I managed to stay upright one of those days. Those uphills were somewhat challenging! 50% success rate. Hmmm. Need to work on getting unclipped from those pedals a skosh quicker.
All in all, a restful and active couple of days. AND, of course, we had our coming home lunch at the coffee shop in Chama. Oh Yeah. Gotta have those veggie 'dillas!

Tuscon Hiking Trip

March 14th

Ten members of SJOC enjoyed three days of hiking in southern Arizona. Those that took part were Caroline and John Warsawski, Jim and Jean Carson, John and Judy Clay, Jill and Donovan Porterfield and John and Joyce Ramberg.

Besides sunny warm days, we enjoyed a meal at a Mexican restaurant. A special thank you to the Hopkins for having us over for fresh Guaymas shrimp and cocktails and to the Porterfields for the wonderful corned beef and cabbage dinner we had at their home.

I hope everyone has been enjoying the great snow conditions, I know the group that went to Telluride couldn't have asked for better. This month is our quarterly potluck and the club does not supply a main dish at this one so if you're feeling creative and want to try something out on your friends please bring something to share. This is a social meeting so there will be no program. If you have led an activity and have some good pictures email them to Michael Schneider and he will use them in the slide show during our dinner. mschneid@skywerx.com We had great success with new folks interested in working together on the Ski Swap. Dalas Weisz, Ron Chacey, Joyce Ramberg and Kathie Baughman are coordinating things. If you are interested in helping in any way please let them know. Again we thank Jim and Nancy Cole for all they've done the last several years. Our young at heart Will James will be 80 on March 13 and is planning to hike Alberta Peak. All you skiers come join us that morning for the climb and a little birthday cake on top before we ski down.

Telluride Trip

On Jan 28th, a fine group of snow lovers took over the Rico Hotel, gathering around the great room fireplace after a short afternoon on Lizard Head Pass. I think Klaus had his first lesson in snowshoe rolling! To be sure , happy hour had plenty of food and wine before a fabulous meal in the five table Argentine Grill with its old wood stove adding extra warmth. Morning dawned still and cloudless making the day of skiing one filled with great conditions and stunning views. The happy hour view from Allred's Bar on the mountain of sunset over Telluride 2000' below was unmatched. The second day was slightly warmer and the racing duo of Carolle and Klaus brought home bronze and silver medals. I think everyone finished the day on weary legs after two long days of exhilarating skiing.

Cross Country Hut Adventure

What Takes Place in the Hut, Stays in the Hut. . .
Unless, of course, you're a blabber mouth writing an article for the newsletter! Susan, Charleen, and Sue joined Abby and me on a 4 mile XC jaunt to the Trujillo Meadows yurt which overlooks, whaddya know, Trujillo Meadows. And, as luck would have it, Trujillo Reservoir. We were so happy that Charleen put in an order for perfect weather because we got it. A light snow 30 minutes after our arrival provided perfect snow for the next day's play. Sunny blue skies stuck around during our entire stay.
The yurt proved very well stocked and all jumped into yurt chores with a gusto. We learned the advantage of hanging the toilet seat by the wood-burning stove. In fact, I became so enamored with that warm seat that I'm thinking of hanging mine at home by the fireplace. Speaking of wood-burning stoves, did you know that you have to keep adding wood if you want it to continue heating throughout the night? That proved a bit inconvenient so we simply hunkered down deep in our bags and crossed our fingers that someone would have to go to the bathroom about 6 a.m. and, oh yes, get that fire going again since the outside temp. rested on 4 degrees!
It was great fun. We managed to eat pretty much non-stop which was, after all, why we were there. We did manage to get in some skiing, too. On our way home, we stopped in Chama for the best quesadillas in the world. If you haven't been there, try out the coffee shop across from the train depot. Yummulicious!
I know, you thought I was going to dish on my gal pals but you were wrong. I have to be careful. Can't have them dishing on me! ~Betsy~

Message from our President

Howdy,

Just a reminder that this month's meeting moves back to our regular day on Thursday, Feb. 5 @ 6:30 p.m. We'll have a good program on wildland fire ecology from Ros Wu.

Most of us are skiing now and it may seem a long time until the next ski swap but we will need to discuss it this month. Jim and Nancy Cole have given their time for many years on this project but now wish to pass their knowledge on to others and we will need someone new to take over this activity. It is the primary source of funds for our scholarships and serves a community service. Many volunteers have worked with the ski swap and help get the job done each year so a new coordinator will have lots of talented help. If you are interested, we need and welcome YOU. Please talk to Jim, Nancy or anyone on the Board.

2009 Festival Of Trees

Christmas is just past but we’re already looking forward to the 2009 holiday festivities. Shirley Hunter and Sue Bozek will be leading SJOC’s participation in the 2009 Festival of Trees. They’ll be looking for volunteers at a later date to serve on the committee. In the meantime, put your thinking caps on and keep an eye out for decorations that will fit with an outdoor theme and representative of our Club. The tree is in the bag and awaiting its adornment for a worthy cause.

Cross Country Skiing Jan 7th

There is a new group that meets every Wed. morning at 9:30 at the Golf Course for cross country skiing. These are scheduled through the middle of Feb. All skiing abilities are welcome. Come join them and see how many laps you can do. This was the first one, and 8 people showed up. Show up if you want to join in. Check the calendar for last minutes changes due to track conditions/grooming.

Chama Chili Ski Classic

Abby Linzie, Rex Shurtleff, & Betsy Cotton participated in the ski race held February 18th near the Cumbres Pass. The course was beautiful, well-groomed, and a little but not too challenging for all these first-timers (to the race, I mean).

Abby placed 1st in her group. Rex placed 2nd in his group. And, well, Betsy finished and didn't fall down.

It was great fun and we recommend it for next year. Perhaps we can get an SJOC team - how about the San Juanabees?! We could wear bumble bee hats or something. Think about it!

Winterrrrrrr Overnighterrrrrr

January 23/24

Terry Baker (who else?) organized a little winter backpack to practice winter camping skills. As you might imagine, attendance was thin. But, leave it to good friend and tough dude Leo to accompany him on this foray. As told by the duo, Friday was really good going in-not too cold and overcast. Getting out wasn't quite as much fun as it was raining and wet but they got to practice some SAR techniques and have some fun.

Astraddle A Saddle

Jean Carson coordinated this outing for the 29 attendees. After taking a ride on two sleds and learning some history of the area and the cabin under a beautiful starlit night, the group enjoyed a lovely dinner. The food was fabulous said Jean and everyone had a nice time.

Thursday A.M. Walk/Snowshoe

January 22nd, the group met at and snowshoed Reservoir Hill for a change of pace from the golf course. Aside from someone almost disappearing into hidden oak brush from time to time, it was a relaxing and enjoyable time. Afterward several of the group decided to take the relaxation to the next level by soaking in the springs for a bit.

Everyone is welcome to join the group which typically meets at the PLPOA Rec Center on Park at 9 a.m. every Thursday. If the road are very clear, they walk. If not, they snowshoe on the golf course. After an hour of exercise, there is usually about an hour of refreshment and conversation at La Tazza.

Moderate Snowshoe at the Summit

January 25th

David & Shirley Hunter always provide a vigorous snowshoe adventure. While the original plan of shoeing the HooDoos was kabashed due to nowhere to park that day, the intrepid group continued up the mountain. It was a blustery day that continued to bluster stronger as the outing progressed. The group enjoyed the fresh powder and endured the winds.

Let it always be said that when you go with David & Shirley, you feel like you've been somewhere!

The January meeting will be held on January 8th since the first Thursday of the month is New Years Day. Our speaker will be Michael Whiting. He will do a presentation on the Southwest Land Alliance. He will speak about its role and its recent cooperative success with Alpine Cascade Corp. to convert 6,300 acres of land into a conservation easement.

Remember to bring money for the Education Fund Raffle.

Proceeds benefit Pagosa senior students going to college as well as younger students studying nature and conservation and learning outdoor sports and skills.

Have You Heard?

Speaking of outdoor activities, there is a new store in town, re-sport. If you need outdoor gear or if you have used gear you want to sell, this is the place for you. They are located between Shanghai and Movie Gallery. It is a consignment shop dedicated to providing all types of outdoor gear, clothing, and sporting goods. They have donated a gift certificate for the Jan. raffle. So stop in sometime and check it out.

Astraddle a Saddle sleigh ride and dinner

A sleigh ride and dinner in the cabin at Astraddle a Saddle has been scheduled for Saturday, January 17. We will meet in the parking lot of Astraddle a Saddle at 6pm. They have discounted the price of the dinner for us at $ 35 / person. Those of you who have done this in the past know how much fun the sleigh ride is and how much you will enjoy the dinner. At the December meeting and Christmas dinner a sign up sheet was posted to see if there was enough interest -- 39 people had signed up. Unfortunately they can only accommodate 28 people at one time. Now that we have set a date, it is anticipated that some people will not be able to participate due to scheduling conflicts and hopefully we can accommodate everyone who wants to participate.

Payment is due in advance of the activity. Please pay at the SJOC membership meeting on Jan. 8 or before. Jean Carson is leading this activity and will take your payment for this activity. Her phone# is 731-3478. You can call her, get her mailing address, and send her a check before the Jan. 8 meeting. The first 28 to pay will be the ones who can participate in this activity. Easy Snow Show on Wolf Creek Pass

Our easy snowshoe on Dec. 6 started right on the divide on Wolf Cr. Pass. From there we proceeded SW along a snowmobile/xcountry trail that connected up w/the Treasure Mtn. Rd. (FS 725). Then took an old skid trail out to the middle of a clearcut area. We had beautiful views all the way down Wolf Cr. to the peaks past the W. Fork of the San Juan. On the way back we did some bushwacking. It turned out to be a beautiful day for a "shoe". A total of 18 people participated in the snow shoe. Afterwards most of us went to Bear Cr. Rest. for lunch and drinks. Thanks to all who participated. Gregg Howard

Easy Snowshoe in campground on Williams Cr.

On Dec. 20 we took an easy snowshoe through one of the campgrounds along Williams Cr. in the Piedra country. We followed one of the roads around and down to Williams Cr. where we took a break and enjoyed the scenery. The snow was deep and we all took turns at breaking trail. Total length of the "shoe" was about 2.5 mi. As you can see from the pictures the scenery was amazing -- even the "fanny photo". A total of 15 people participated in the snowshoe. After the shoe most of us went to the Buffalo Inn for lunch and drinks. Thanks to all who participated -- and thanks to Lorna Fox and Peggy Schanken for the pictures. Gregg Howard

X-Country Lessons

On Dec. 19th, Lee and Dean Cox were gracious enough to give free x-country lessons to those of us with little or no experience. It was a lot of fun and we learned a lot. They were great.

2008 Sports Swap

The 2008 Ski and Sports Swap sponsored by the San Juan Outdoor Club was held on Saturday, October 25. We had lots of gear from nine merchants from Pagosa, Durango, and Aztec plus that contributed for sale by individual sellers. We had lots of happy buyers who found affordable gear for their children or themselves. We had a super bake sale that added festivity and good eats to the throngs of people. And over 40 SJOC members helped with various aspects of the sale. Unfortunately, our gross sales were down about $4,500 from the sales of the last two years which were our biggest two sales ever. We assume the general economic situation had a negative effect. This year we also lowered our commission from 20% to 17% to bring our Swap in line with others in the area, further reducing our income, and we had a couple of unaccounted-for gear items that cost the Club about $300. The total effect was to lower the Club’s take for scholarships to about $1700. However, the Bake Sale added its highest total ever of $370 to the Club’s coffers. We had wonderful and experienced workers for Friday evening and early Saturday morning check-ins, with some checking the manifests while others unloaded gear and placed it into its appropriate location. Somehow, the workers managed to place all the gear into the too-little space available. Meanwhile, others set up the food corner, and still others prepared the check-out area. We opened our doors only slightly after the appointed 9:00 am starting time to a steady stream of potential buyers. After closing time, the SJOC volunteers went to work sorting and reloading the merchants’ gear, sorting the individual sellers’ gear, and putting away tables and chairs. Finally, the loading of the gear contributed to the Humane Society signaled we were near the end. This year we hired some help for the final clean-up – bathrooms and mopping. We would love to list all of the SJOC members who helped so much with all aspects of the work, but to name some would undoubtedly mean leaving out others. What struck us this year is how much of the work happens seemingly without direction or command. In fact, this is because the same people have helped for so many years that they know exactly what to do and if they need more help they just call on the new volunteers who then learn and will be ready for next year. The merchants who bring large loads of their gear to sell make the Swap possible. In addition, many of the merchants work all day at the sale, adding their expertise to help buyers find the right gear. The Club is also especially indebted to the Humane Society which loans us cash registers and a credit card machine, and hauls off the donations of unsold gear at the end of the Swap.

Last Easy Hike
October 4th

The last Easy Hike of the season took place on Oct.4 to Opal Lake. A total of 14 people participated on the hike. We hiked up to Opal lake , rested, then bushwacked into some beautiful old growth aspen stands and then connected back up w/ the trail. As you can see from the photos, we hit the colors just right. It was a nice way to end the easy hikes. We will resume in April of next year. It was a great hike, a great day, and the company as always was the best. Thanks to all who participated, and thanks to Leonard Kleiner and Joe Negri for providing the photos -- Gregg Howard

Zion National Park
October 25 - 31

Sjoc Members Doug & Susie Farmer (along with Susie's sister Joanne), Ken & Joanne Long, Betsy & Peggy Cotton, Carolyn & John Warszawski, and David & Shirley Hunter gathered at Zion National Park to enjoy the beautiful collage of fall colors and soaring limestone cliffs. 5 members of the group took advantage of a beautiful day to play a round of golf in Hurricane while others either hiked, shopped or just hung out. Special hikes were the Virgin River, The Subway (bottoms up since top down meant rapelling and perhaps swimming), Hidden Canyon, Angels Landing, and Echo Canyon.

Easy Snowshoe
November 22

Gregg Howard led the way into winter sports with the first Easy Snowshoe of the season which went well. We had 18 (including the leader) who participated. The "shoe" took place along FS Rd. 725 just 2 mi. from Wolf Creek Pass. It included shoeing along an old closed woods road, and then some bushwacking down to Wolf Creek to check out some frozen water falls. Total length of the shoe was a little over 2.5 mi. w/an elevation gain of about 200 ft. The snow was soft in the trees and adequate depth for shoeing. We all had a good time, getting to know each other, and the weather was perfect. After the shoe 1/2 of us went to Bear Creek Bar and Grill for lunch and drinks. Thanks to all that participated. One or two require participants to provide payment in order to be officially signed-up so you'll want to be prepared with check/cash in hand. Look ahead to future months, not just the one we're in at the moment. Pre-planning is required when reservations are necessary so give it a gander and make your choices!

Turkey Trot
Thanksgiving Day

Since Thanksgiving fell on a Thursday this year (hehe) some of the Thursday walkers signed up for the Annual Turkey Trot benefiting the Pagosa Dolphin swim team. Some of us (okay, me) envisioned an invigorating walk in a soft falling snow. What we got was a cold, wet, rainy morning that tested our resolve. . . and we passed that test!

Snowshoe at the Summit
November 29

David & Shirley Hunter's "On Call" snowshoe list is GREAT! If you like to snowshoe, send them an email or give them a call and ask them to put you on the list. When the snow looks good, the weather looks nice, and they decide to head out, they'll call the list and set a time and meeting place. You just show up. Can't get any easier than that.
On Saturday, David & Shirley, Betsy C., Sue B., Jim L. & Linda E., and Gary B. drove out of overcast Pagosa and headed up to the summit to enjoy the snow under a sunny, blue sky. It felt so good to get out on our snowshoes that we didn't want to quit. It got our enthusiasm going for winter sports. We shoed up to the Rock Garden but it'll take some more feet of snow before we'll be venturing into there.
It was wonderful so knock those cob webs off your snowshoes, skis, etc. and get out there.

NOVEMBER!!

Good stuff coming down the pike! Our club meeting is November 6th with Brad Cochennet, CEO of the Pagosa Mountain Hospital. Of course, Thanksgiving with lots of goodies. And surely we'll see snow! Oh yeah, snow! After the Ski Swap, we should all be ready for that white stuff.

Speaking of snow, be thinking of winter outings that you, yes you, can coordinate. Remember that anybody in the club is fully capable of organizing an outing. It's easy. Just pick a day, a time, and what you want to do. Call or email Gregg Howard and ask him to put it on the calendar. He'll make up an activity sheet for the next meeting. It can be an hour long outing or a multi-day outing. It doesn't matter as long as it is something you want to do and want others to join in. Don't be shy. The more people that are willing to organize something fun, the more fun stuff there is for everyone to do. So pull out your calendar and start planning! Don't wait for someone else to do it because they might be waiting for YOU to do it!

By the time you read this, the Ski Swap will be over and, hopefully, we will have made some money for educational purposes and for search and rescue. Thank you to all who worked so hard to make this a success.

We as a Board are working on a slate of officers for next year. If you have an interest in serving on the Board please contact Doug Farmer 731-2212 or douglasfarmer@centurytel.net. We would love to see some of you step forward and volunteer for a position.

The holidays are just around the corner. That means our annual Party which will be held on December 4th. Joyce Ramberg and Toosje Lamoreaux will be in charge of the party this year. The club will be providing the meat and you will bring a side dish, salad or dessert. Look for sign up sheets at the November meeting. We will also be bringing a gift for a child in the community.

As I look back on the past year I can't help but be proud of the things that the club has done. A general thank you goes out to all who have worked so hard to make the past year a success. Joyce

Joyce mentioned needing volunteers to become officers of the Board. It seems folks avoid this type of commitment BUT I just want to say, speaking as Secretary to the Board and Newsletter Editor, it is a rewarding experience, doesn't take boocoos of time, and is well worth your time. We meet once a month for a couple of hours. Every position has it's duties but nobody spends a ton of time on it. For instance, as Secretary, I take notes during the meeting, type them up when I get home, and email them to the other members for review. That's it. No big deal. Each position is different, it doesn't consume your life, AND it's important to have new folks with new ideas come in each year.
I have created a link under "Useful Links" called SJOC By-Laws for your information. They're pretty short and straight forward. Give them a read then
give Doug a call and volunteer. That is what makes our club strong, when everyone pitches in.

Quartz Lake Backpack
October 4th

Despite a winter storm watch in effect, four of us, Gary Brewer, Terry Baker, and Donna and Leo Milner, decided to go to Quartz Lake on the scheduled overnight back pack. The morning was overcast and windy. As we climbed up to the “key hole”, we were treated to spectacular displays of fall colors. Around noon, it started snowing. By the time we got to the lake there was a light dusting of snow on the ground. We set up our tents, and started collecting firewood. But before we could get a fire started, we were in full blizzard mode, heavy snowfall and strong winds. By 4 p.m. we were all in our tents for the start of a long night. As the night went on, the space inside our tents got smaller as the walls of the tents collapsed under the weight of the snow. But at least the snow helped insulate the tents, and we were fairly warm. It snowed until about 8 a.m., with an accumulation of 8-10 inches of snow. The hike back to the cars was more reminiscent of a David and Shirley Hunter snowshoe, minus the snowshoes. The trail back to the key hole was hard to follow and we lost the trail twice. The going was slow, and we had to be careful on the narrow parts of the trail. Once again we were treated to spectacular scenery, this time with the golden aspens standing out against the white foreground.
It was quite an adventure. Good thing Search and Rescue didn’t have to come get us.

Wild Rivers Recreation Area Backpack
October 15-17

Remember when I was talking about flexibility in my last backpack article? Well, we got to flex again. This trip was originally planned for 13-15 but we decided the weather was a bit hostile with an improving trend toward the middle of the week. It's kind of like watching the stock market, you have to adjust and take a bit of a gamble. Anyway, our gamble paid off big with beautiful blue skies and cool temperatures in the Wild River gorge.

Joan, Barb, Susan, and I (otherwise known as The Women) began our outing with a scrumptious meal at Graham's in Taos. Now, that is the way to begin a backpack! We headed on down the Big Arsenic Trail switchbacking about 800 feet down. After toodling along the Rio Grande river, we made camp at our luxury accommodations known as Little Arsenic Springs campsite. I say luxury since we had a sheltered picnic table and a CLEAN pit toilet with LOTS of toilet paper. You could leave the door open and view the scenery if you so chose. It doesn't get any better than that.

Thursday was spent hiking to La Junta where the Rio Grande and the Red rivers meet. We also ventured upriver to view some petroglyphs. It was a lovely, relaxing day with a hint of breeze and only wispy clouds in the sky.

Since we began our outing with a meal in Taos, we decided to end it in the same fashion. I can really recommend that strategy. It takes the edge off the backpack meals and makes the entire experience feel more like a vacation! And fortunately Taos has a lot of open air eating areas for the more aromatic of its visitors.

Kind of a transition month in my mind. Getting pretty chilly during night if you're camping. Still nice and warm during the days. Some leaves are turning and it could snow up high almost any time. We go from fleece in the morning to Tshirts in the afternoon and back to fleece for the evening hours. We're tempted to drag out some winter stuff but know, deep down, that it's just a bit too early. It's time to get the ski pass but not yet time to ski. Yep, it's a transition month. Thank goodness we're in Pagosa and the transition is from fabulous to, well, still fabulous!

Thanks to all who brought the good food to the last potluck in September. A special thanks goes to Jon Reed for letting us use his camp grounds again. The board got a gift certificate for him in appreciation. The weather was great and we all had a great time

We are looking for members to fill board positions starting in January. This is your opportunity to do something for the club and to bring in fresh new ideas. It is very rewarding to serve as an officer and a lot of fun, too! It's also a good way to get to know your fellow members. I know that we have a lot of new members that have joined in the past 3 years. Why not take that step and volunteer to be on the Board? Doug Farmer is in charge of the Nominating Committee. Give him a call. 731-2212 0r email him at douglasfarmer@centurytel.net or get in touch with any of the current Board at the next meeting. Remember: The club is what it is because of you. If we had no volunteers, there would be no club.

A Note From Concerned Readers

A couple of articles in previous newsletters have mentioned hikers picking wildflowers. Concerned readers ask that I remind everyone that Leave No Trace means taking nothing but photographs out of our forests and leaving only footprints. Most often we are hiking in national forest or wilderness areas. As responsible stewards of the land, we should set the example that all wildlife, plants, etc. are to be left where they are found. So, please, in the future take only photographs away from the hike. Thanks.

SPORTS SWAP
October 25th

The annual SJOC Ski and Sports Swap is scheduled for Saturday, October 25 from 9:00 am to l:00 pm. The Swap is a service the SJOC provides the community by making low cost sports gear available. It is also a primary fund-raiser for scholarships the Club gives local graduating seniors each year and for local search and rescue.

Mark your calendar for Friday, October 24 and Saturday, October 25. The Swap organizers, Jim and Nancy Cole, will need lots of help as usual. Last year almost 50 Club members helped in some way with the Swap and the Club raised a near record amount for scholarships. Club members John Clay, Judy Collins, Linda Espinosa. Joyce Ramberg, Carrie Weisz and many others are helping to run various aspects of the Swap.

Look for the sign-up sheets at the October 2 SJOC meeting and sign up.
Help is needed to:

-Bring baked goods
-Check in goods from merchants and individuals and set up the Exhibit Hall at the
Fairgrounds on Friday night, Oct. 24 from 5:00 to 6:30.
-Check in goods Saturday morning (7:30 to 8:30) before the Swap opens at 9:00.
-Help with the bake sale on Saturday from 8:30 to 1:00.
-Help with sales of sports goods during the Swap from 9:00 to 1:00.
-Run the check-out for sales from 9:00 to 1:00.
-Check out unsold goods back to merchants or individuals from 1:00 to 2:00.
-Clean up the hall from 1:00 to 2:00.
-Tally up sales and amounts owed each seller on Sunday.
-Write the checks for goods sold to merchants and individuals.

The Swap receives the bulk of the goods for sale from area merchants. Their goods are used or last year’s products. Many of the merchants are very helpful to us during the Swap, agreeing to help buyers select goods including those not their own.

Individuals also bring many items to sell. So check your storage and find the items with some life left in them that you can part with. However, be forewarned: used items in good condition that are priced low sell the best.

The Club takes items on consignment and sells them for a consignment fee of 17%. That fee pays the expenses and leaves money for scholarships. The SJOC Board approved lowering the consignment fee this year from 20% to 17% as this number has become common throughout Colorado. In addition. Lowering the fee allows us to help the merchants a bit, as they help us so much to make this a successful event.

Salsa Festival
August 31st

On August 31, ten members went on a mission to find the best tasting salsa in Creede. The first stop we made was to the Old Firehouse for ice cream in preparation for the heat we expected to encounter. We also sampled fudge, drank beer, and did a little shopping. Some of us stayed to tour the Creede Museum, with its 19th century saloon bar. Then we drove a bit further past Creede to view North Clear Creek Falls which was really cranking.

Conejos River/Duck Lake Backpack
September 9-12

Believe it or not, three brave women signed up for my second Women's Backpack.
Charleen, Joan, and Susan joined me for the Conejos River SemiLoop which begins by the far end of Platoro Reservoir. This trail parallels the middle fork of the Conejos River, junctions with the CDT, then comes back along the north fork of the Conejos. Things did not go exactly as planned. But, then again, when do they ever?! Huh? Huh? Yeah! You KNOW what I'm talking about if you're a backpacker. If you're thinking about being a backpacker, the one attribute you should have is F-L-E-X-I-B-I-L-I-T-Y in what you take, where you plan to go, where you end up going, and the list goes on.

Joan and her fly rod angel, Milo. The flyrod had come loose and fallen from Joan's pack, a fact not to be discovered until we were well along the trail. Just as we ascended from viewing the falls, Milo and his USFS fish stocking crew came by with a "Anybody lose a fly rod?" on his lips.

Soon after this happy reunion, we proceeded up the trail as the sky grew ominous. At the next fire ring we found, we decided it was time to create shelter and a good thing, too, since the ice pellets started the second I threw my rain fly on. We just managed to throw our gear into tents and under tarps before it really let loose on us. Well, most of us "just barely managed it." One of us had a bit of drying out to do when the clouds gave us a break.
I distinctly remember hearing Charleen pronounce, "Oh, we'll have a beautiful clear morning." (If you know Charleen, you know this is not an unusual statement for her to make.)

We all woke up to rain on our tents, snow on the Divide, and some really angry looking clouds. We decided to be F-L-E-X-I-B-L-E and change our plan. Out we went with wet tents packed, rain falling, sloshing through muddy horse tracks. We were glad to reach the car!

Instead of heading home to a hot bath and hot meal, we regrouped at the Elk Creek trail head (off Hwy. 17), dried out, and headed up to Duck Lake.

Evening Cookout and Night Hike September 13th

The evening cookout/hike was held on Sept. 13 on the Middle Fork of the Piedra River. Only 7 people showed up -- a small but cozy crowd. The cookout was held on the edge of a large meadow w/big views of Toner and Rock Mtns. The Moon showed up over the ridge about 8 and we all took a hike down to the river and then walked along the river. The weather was good, and the temperatures pleasant. Easy Hike
September 20th

The easy hike was held on Sept. 20. We started from the 997 rd. 1 mi. NE of Sportsman Supply and followed an old closed woods rd. for about 2 mi. to near the base of Rooster Rock. There were some pretty nice views at the far end of the hike. We had 14 people participate in the hike. Some were first time hikers on the easy hikes. It was a fun hike and good group of folks. Piddle Paddle

Well, there were only two paddlers in the piddle paddle but we paddled and piddled enough for a passel of piddle paddlers in Pagosa Lake! The predominant point is that we enjoyed piddling and we were pleased with our paddling and we propose that more people ponder the idea of participating when I plan another.

Cumbres-Toltec Train Ride
September 25th

Our S.J.O.C. group got Fall off to a spectacular start with a scenic feast on the train between Chama and Osier. The warm, blue-skyed day allowed many to ride in the open car taking pictures and absorbing the historical comments imparted by the volunteer docent who was on board.
Marcia Baker has our huge appreciation for selecting the best possible trip package and giving her time lining up and organizing the group. How lucky we are to have her!
The lunch stop at Osier lived up to it's good reputation by giving a choice of Turkey, Meat loaf or Soup and Salad shortly after boarding. That allowed them to have everything ready when the train reached Osier. The large number of passengers from the East and West bound trains were served very quickly with delicious food.!
There was a happy, holiday atmosphere from start to finish on our perfect day of Fall color appreciation.

A Note From Gregg regarding Activities

Last Easy Hike

The last easy hike will be held on Oct. 4 -- we will be hiking to Opal Lake, and then doing some bushwacking to some Old Growth stands of aspen. The colors should be just right, so bring your camaras. Afterwards a late lunch for those who want to participate.

Thanks to all those who participated in the easy hikes this past spring/summer. I had a lot fun sharing these hikes with you. We will pick it up with easy snowshoes in late November. I will do 2 easy snow shoes a month, and also do moonlight snow shoes each month, with possibly an evening cookout. We will also be offering other winter activities, so please check the SJOC calendar often.

I can't believe it's September! How time flies.
It's soon time for the Ski Swap so get your closets cleaned and bring any sporting goods to the swap. Most important, look for the sign-up sheets. Nancy and Jim are in charge of the swap again this year and they are looking for a lot of help. It's always fun so hope to see you there.
Unfortunately, some activities were a bust because of bad weather. Bart Cox and group left for their 4x4 trip in the back country and came back the same day. Ron Chacey's mushroom hike didn't quite. Mushroom, I mean. No one showed. I sure hope he does better at the county commissioner elections in November!
I'm heading to Minnesota to see the grand kids before school starts. Hope to see you all at the Sportsman's Lodge for the Potluck on September 4th.

A chair or mat to sit on if you don't wish to sit in the grass.
Your calendar so you can record all those great outings you're going to sign up for.

Silverton

A group of 17 SJOC members gathered in Silverton on July 19 & 20 for a weekend of hiking and “Flower” watching. On Saturday, the weather showed its best side and stayed that way all day for a fantastic day of hiking. The Coles led a group into Spencer Basin that was dressed in its finest wildflowers. This group hiked through the Basin and up to a ridge overlooking Highlands Mary Lakes. The Hunters led a group on a new hike-through starting in the Velocity Peak valley at a small glacial lake, up & up to over 13,000 feet then down into Boulder Gulch and out. It was one of the best hikes we have done and the flowers, especially the Columbines, were magnificent. We all met for BBQ that evening. On Sunday, everyone headed up to Porphrey Basin. There were still snowbanks on the road so we parked and walked about a mile up the road that was lined with wildflowers, waterfalls and great scenery. The Cole group stayed in the Basin and enjoyed Bullion King Lake and other smaller lakes while the Hunter’s group climbed (of course) and then crossed a scree field loaded with King’s Crown and other rock-loving flowers. We stayed high for a view overlooking the Black Bear Road to Telluride and proceeded to bushwhack down the ridge to our cars and the other group. The Old Man in the Mountains were magnificent on the ridge as were other low growing plants.

Creede

SJOC members numbering 12 met in Creede on Saturday, July 26, for a wildflower hike to San Louis Pass. There was low-hanging fog when we started our drive up to trailhead but it cleared for a beautiful hike. We started hiking the Willow Creek trail around 11,000 and climbed gradually to over 12,000 to the Colorado Trail intersection at the Pass. We hiked to where we were overlooking a deep cirque with San Louis Peak in the background and enjoyed snacks and a box of fudge from Silverton candy shop . When the storm clouds started building, we headed back down and ended up at the Old Firehouse for lunch and/or ice cream.

Crater Lake Backpack
August 5-7

Five intrepid women backpacked to Crater Lake for a two night stay. It was a beautiful hike of about 3 1/2 miles in, some of it along the Continental Divide trail so we had big views along the way. The lake is set down in a, well, a crater so steep slopes and high peaks surround it for an epic setting. The water is an opaque blue green and, according to Barb and Joan, full of sizable cutthroat trout. A little rain punctuated the nighttime hours and temps in the 50's for our hike out were perfect as it entailed 2000 ft. vertical and a bit of huffing and puffing. It was beautiful and I think we'd all do it again. Thanks to Donna Milner for being photographer on this trip! Betsy C.

Recipe for a Perfect Day
August 22, 2008

Start with:
1 heaping tbsp. of Pagosa Peak
19 willing souls as packaged
1.73 miles of challenging trail
2500 vertical feet
5 hours of sunshine and blue skies

Add:
4 miles of really bumpy road
Water
Snacks
Cameras

Stir until all ingredients mix together at the trailhead. As the recipe progresses, allow faster portion to separate and rise to the top. Wait for slower portion to blend at 12,640 ft. and you have the perfect recipe for a Pagosa Peak hike!

This was my first foray into day hike leadership and everyone made it effortless and enjoyable. Thanks to all who participated. Thanks to Tom Wolf for providing several of the photos.

Evening Cookout / Lake Float at the Collins Home

The Cookout was held at Judy and Ben Collin's home on Lake Forest. A total of 19 people floated in and out during the evening. The weather did cooperate, but the evening temperature got a little cool. The moon sort of showed up through the thin clouds, and some of us did take our boats out on the lake after the moon came up. The lake was placid and beautiful to float on at night. There was plenty of food and drinks -- we had a nice warming fire -- and we all enjoyed the evening together. We will do this again next year, but maybe in July when it is a little warmer in the evening. Thank you Judy and Ben for opening up your home to us and hosting this activity. Easy Hike in the Treasure Mountain Area

The Easy Hike was held on the afternoon of Sun. Aug. 24. 10 people participated in the hike. We went up high to get out of the heat. The group drove up FS Rd. 725 about 3 mi. parked then did some bushwacking and walked an old woods road to a saddle on ridge less than a mile from Treasure Mountain. We rested on the edge of a meadow that had a great view of Treasure Mtn. Also had some great views on the continental divide, Sheep Mtn., on the other side of the highway. The hike round trip was 3 mi. There were still plenty of flowers to see. One of the hikers collected a bouquet of flowers to take home, and she was dubbed the "flower child". It was a cool hike, with lots of beautiful big views. Thanks to all who participated. Gregg Howard

Bart Cox's Star-Crossed Trip

On Saturday morning, August 16, Bart and Erica Cox, guest Margaret Mayor from Chinle , AZ , Nancy and Jim Cole, Paul Draper, Jean and Jim Scott, Carrie and Dalas Weisz, Tammy Wilde and David Musser started out on a 4x4-hiking-camping trip that promised a drive up Grayback Mountain , climbs of Bonito Peak and Telluride Mountain , and a lively campfire. But a road closure in Summitville and bad weather, shortened the trip to a pleasant lunch near Kerr Lake and the 250 foot ascent of Telluride Mountain ( ? ) , before we headed home, passing a snowplow scraping frozen precipitation from U.S. 160 as we crossed back over Wolf Creek Pass.

We are looking forward to Bart’s next attempt to incorporate the remaining parts of the outing into another trip.
