March 2008

Welcome to your new newsletter format. Change is scary but it can be good. We hope this will allow everyone to easily view the newsletter at any time. It is not formatted with printing in mind. You can print but we don't promise a page by page result. If you need access to a computer, the library offers quite a few. Higher Grounds and Plaza Grill also have computers available. Or use it as an excuse to get together with a friend while borrowing a little time on theirs. If you want to see any photo more up close and personal, just click on it. They are varying sizes depending on what was provided.

If you will look to the right, you will see lots of good information including a link to the Activities Calendar under the heading "Useful Links". Just click on it and you will be taken to the wonderful Calendar created by David & Shirley Hunter and which is now diligently kept up-to-date by Gregg Howard and Toosje Lamoreaux, Activities Coordinators. When you click on an outing, you will be provided with the information you need to participate or learn more. Please feel free to call the activity leader if you have questions.

And now a few words from our President, Joyce Ramberg:

Greetings,

Your board is hard at work and we have finally had some members step forward to help us out. We finally have a news letter on line thanks to Betsy Cotton and Shirley Hunter.

Judy Collins, Gloria Smith, Ingrid Leppitsch, and Mary Webb have volunteered to be refreshments coordinators.

We have a scholarship board hard at work. They are Charlene Stipe, Sara Scott, Cindy Quigley, and Glenn Van Patter.

Thanks so much to these volunteers who have donated their time and talents.

Have you checked the activities calendar? There are many activities and more are being added all the time.

We got wonderful feedback from our last meeting, work session. Many of your ideas will be used as the year progresses.

I’m looking forward to the rest of the year. I hope some of you will step forward and offer to lead an activity.

Joyce

In this first posting, we are playing a little catch-up to help keep you up on what's been happening. We ask that all event leaders submit 2 or 3 photos with captions and a short write-up about Who, What, Where, & When. Send it to our email at sjocnewsletter@yahoo.com. This info. will always be available on the sidebar but we wanted to put it front and center this first time.

And Now for the Fun Stuff . . .

On January 26th, 8 adventurous members tackled Fall Creek on snowshoes; this was just after we had the heavy snowfalls, so it was VERY deep. We hiked along the creek and up and down hills, one so steep we ended up having to slide back down it. Members included Gary Brewer, Leo & Donna Milner, guest Beth, John & Carolyn Warszawski. A group of 16 members took a fun and relaxing trip on the Durango/Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad train on January 19th. It was a beautiful sunny day and the views from the train were breathtaking. At the end of the ride, some of us explored the museum and others went off to do shopping, etc. Photos by John Warszawski. Leader: Marsha Baker.

A small but dedicated group of cross country skiers have enjoyed the abundant snow on the trails this winter. Meeting every Saturday and also MLK holiday and President's day to find and explore the optimum trail for the day we will continue through March 1st. And, of course, the outing concludes with libations and socializing.

One of Gregg's great ideas - a moonlight snowshoe at Williams Reservoir. The moon and clouds cooperated while two dozen snowshoers enjoyed Williams Reservoir, good food, good fires, and good company.

The flash would only reach so far but you get the idea.

Kudos to Gregg for all the ideas and prep. Kudos to John R. for getting the flames flamin'. And kudos to everyone for great fixin's and fun.

The motley crew.

Gregg's Groupies got together for a Thursday morning snowshoe beginning at the Ute Campground on 2/21.
I believe the sign speaks for itself. The group slowed its pace the rest of the way.

Gregg pointing out the sights the group would have seen if it weren't snowing. He's a trooper, isn't he?

Out on the trail!

Thanks for checking in. We are always open to new ideas and feedback so let us hear from you. If you have something you would like to see in upcoming newsletters, send us an email. The more people that participate, the better result we'll see. And always remember to have fun in the outdoors!
